“We Don't Own the History as a Whole Documents”

With the Covid-19 pandemic slowing down, our university has resumed its social and cultural activities face-to-face. Speaking at the "Truth, Reputation and Perception Reading the History of Islamic Philosophy and Science" conference held on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty Member Prof Dr İhsan Fazlıoğlu said, "The history as a whole is not in our hands. We cannot say that we have written the history because it is a part of it on every side.”

“History is Difficult to Study”

Speaking about how to read history in general, the history of thought, intellectual history and the history of Islamic philosophy and science in particular, Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty Member Prof Dr İhsan Fazlıoğlu said that it is difficult to study history and that there are different historical research perspectives. He added “For example, think of a mirror, it falls off the wall and it shatters into pieces. Then consider merging and restoring it. Here, historical studies are like the mirror that is wanted to be joined. History as a whole is not in our possession in documents. We cannot say that we have written the history because it is a part of it on every side. Just when we say it's over, we get another historical document and we try to write the history over that document again. It's always a problem to put together these pieces, these documents.”
