Bingöl University organized a meaningful event to preserve cultural heritage and introduce young people to traditional sports. Within the framework of the “Sports-Friendly Campus” vision, the Department of Health, Culture and Sports held the “Traditional Sports Games on Campus” event with the strong participation of university students and staff.
The event started at 12:30 p.m. behind the Central Cafeteria, where students eager to experience ancestral sports competed with great enthusiasm. Participants engaged in javelin throwing, shot put and archery—disciplines that represent deep-rooted sporting traditions in Turkish culture. The organization, which brought vibrant scenes to the university campus, attracted significant interest as an effort to keep traditional sports culture alive and pass it on to younger generations.
Rector of Bingöl University Prof. Dr. Erdal Çelik and Secretary General Prof. Dr. Veysel Turan also attended the event. As part of the programme, Rector Çelik closely interacted with students, tried his hand at the activities and wished success to the competitors. In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Çelik emphasized that sport is not only a physical activity but also an important factor that strengthens social solidarity, discipline and the sense of cultural belonging. He noted that introducing traditional sports to university youth contributes to the preservation of national values and stated that the university will continue to develop projects that support sports culture.
Throughout the event, students not only experienced the excitement of competition but also had the opportunity to learn about the historical background of traditional sports. The competitions, which continued throughout the day, concluded in an atmosphere of enthusiastic support from the audience and strong camaraderie among participants. At the end of the programme, various awards were presented to the winning students. Participants expressed their satisfaction with the event and stated that they would like to see similar sports activities continue.
Bingöl University plans to maintain its efforts to encourage young people to engage in sports while promoting and preserving cultural values through such activities in the coming period.
